The service and food here was outstanding. I enjoyed being able to draw on the paper on the tables. The burgers were very tasty, and the available topping made it even better. The beans here are really great too.

Outstanding. They replaced the signage recently in their shopping center, so it's a lot easier to spot Unk's. Next to Bike Stop in Lee's Summit, by the DMV office. Prior to the past week or two, it was hard to find this place despite being in a relatively high traffic area. Great burger. Have been meaning to try this place for a while. The server was very friendly, albeit maybe a touch overwhelmed by herself. The baked beans are great. Get them on the side. The burger meat was more tasty than average. If you're a first timer, ask for a sample, they'll let you try them first. I really only have one knock on this place, hence my deduction of one star. They won't give you complimentary water. You have to buy a bottled water. This strikes me as petty and cheap. I hate to deduct a star for it, but honestly, it's poor service, and they should rethink this policy. It's just plain customary to provide a glass of water at American restaurants. I know you want me to buy a drink, since the profit margin is high...but FORCING me to comes off as abrasive. Several of our party were going to buy drinks anyway, but it just annoyed the others that they had to buy a bottled water. It wasn't about the money, it's the principle of it. A restaurant should make people feel like a guest, not a paycheck. Relatively minor issue. The food was very good, and we'd go back. It would be a five star if not for this petty issue. Our daughter enjoyed being able to draw on the paper on the table.

I've been heading back more frequently since they have introduced a $7.99 combination deal. It includes a burger, side and drink. The burger is a bit smaller than their other ones (4 oz vs. 5 1/2, I think) but it's certainly big enough. For sides, I've tried the fried pickles (they didn't do it for me although I usually like fried pickles) french fries and sweet potato tots. The tots are BOSS! Still same great family operating this place, and you'll have a hard time finding a better tasting burger. Seriously.

Most delicious burger I've ever had! Endless options! Love love love the fried egg on my burger! Had fried pickles and my husband had the seasoned fries... Both of which were outstanding! Definitely recommend this place to all burger lovers in the KC area!

This place would be very similar to a 5 Guys restaurant, except the burgers are much smaller and not as good. We got seated right away and the waitress took our order within a timely manner. The burgers were less then average when they arrived and nothing really to brag about, for me they were slightly over salted. Each of us in my family ordered the Unk burger with various sides. However my biggest complaint was the service, our drinks 2 ice teas and a diet coke was not even brought to our table till after the food arrived. When the food arrived and was served the waitress forgot to bring the other ice tea we ordered after we reminded her. After we ate the below average burgers, we went to go up front and pay our bill. I kindly reminded her that i never received my ice tea and not charge me. The waitress gave me my total and i handed her my credit card. After several minutes i overheard the customer next to me ask someone whos card is this, i turned around and it was mine. I asked the waitress if i had paid my bill or the other customers. Her exact reply was "i am not sure". Bottom line go to 5 Guys if u want a burger, the customer service is HORRIBLE at this place.

They will start you out with a sample of baked beans. They are amazing. FLAVOR. The burger is amazing. Fries are fantastic. Service was sharp. I even colored on my table. ( see picture) Yelp gave me another great meal.

What a great burger and the staff is very friendly. Can't believe we've missed this little gem on our trips to Lees Summit. Will definitely return.

Tried Unk's for the first time last night and I was really impressed! Jackie made us feel right at home, best customer service I've had in a while. I love that she wanted our names with our orders, her friendliness was very genuine. The free sample of beans was great and smart! I couldn't resist ordering them as a side even though I wasn't hungry enough to finish them. The burgers were also great, I got mine with onions inside the meat patty, yum! My only complaint is not having the option of tap water to drink, bottled only. We don't drink much soda and would like the option not to pay for drinks. Not a big complaint though, we'll be back!

The biggest asset that Unk's burgers has...is Unk! He is just so genuine , boyant, and friendly that you want to be a regular.. Case and point, while I was eating lunch, he had a spontaneous birthday celebration for a patron that he hadn't seen in years. That translates to to warm, melty chocolate chip cookies for the house! In case you're curious, Unk's has really yummy food too! I dig the heat, so I tried the "Hot headed niece". Which, by the way, is no different from the "Hot headed nephew". It is based on the sex of the recipient of said burger. Word to the wise, this is not for the faint at heart! Unk packs the center with chopped habanero peppers. And then tops it with pepper jack cheese. A truly delightful repast, if you, like me, enjoy a good burn. And if that ain't hot enough for you...ask for the ghost pepper cheese, and melt your sinuses. All their burgers come standardly with a choice of toppings for free, similar to 5 guys. There is a small up charge for toppings like bacon or cheese, but this is nominal. There are all the usual sides, with a few Unk twists, like pepper battered onion rings, and lightly batter french fries. I highly recommend the sweet potato fries. I am a freak for a good Sweet potato french fry, and these don't disappoint. The burgers are large, fat patties, like you would get at a family cookout. Portions are generous, prices are commiserate with the quality of the product you receive. On a quirky note, you can't get a glass of water, they only sell bottled water. Not a big deal to most, but if this is your preference, be aware. It didn't bother me, I'm addicted to diet Coke, and they supplied my fix! They are located in a strip mall, on the West side of the Hwy, just off of 3rd. Behind Freddie's and near Side Pockets. Confused yet? It is easier to find than it sounds, and well worth the effort. For a good burger and a good time, come to Unk's, but if it's your birthday...call me and I'll join you for that delicious chocolate chip cookie!

Tonight we stopped in and ate at Unk's for the first time. It's a little hole in the wall place and we all know what those are like. ;) Stinking awesome! This place lived up to the hype! You seat yourself and the waitress comes and gets your drink orders. We had the privilege of having Unk himself take our orders. He is an awesome guy! Very friendly and obviously loves to cut up with his customers. We got to try a sample of the beans before our meal. You have to try these! Very flavorful with a little bit of sweet and spice. They even have a burger with the beans on it! I ordered an Unk burger with ketchup and sautéed mushrooms. The beef patties are cooked with onions inside. The beef was so flavorful especially with that onion flavor cooked in. First time I've ever finished a whole burger. I also ordered sweet potato tots on the side. Very tasty. They had the perfect sweetness to them and were piping hot. We will be back for sure! Check this place out! You won't regret it!

On the way home from the state fair we decided to find a local eatery to have dinner. With the help of Yelp we found a diamond in the rough. UNK is the bomb. The waitress sat us down and explained how and what was on the menu. The burgers are prepared fresh and handmade and you can add what you want on them. The hand battered onion rings are to die for, fries wonderful, and let me tell you those beans! My God! I tried to decipher the ingredients so I could make them at home. I ordered them as a side, are them, then ordered another! All the food had wonderful flavor! This place is family owned and operated and they care about their customers. If I didn't live so far away it would be a regular for me.

Friendly, fast service, nicely sized burgers... Get there early, they locked the doors at 8pm and items unavailable on menu because they ran out... A good thing right;)

Great customer service, fat and friendly. Their food is awesome, their hamburgers are fresh and made to order with 100% ground beef and topped with your favorite condiments. Also their baked beens are intoxicating delicious. These are the best beens in the Kansas City area and would gladly put their beens up against any competitors.

Best burger I've had during my visit. Juicy, flavorful, and yeah! they add egg. The fries were even good reheated. Wish they shipped.

This is a family-owned burger joint and they genuinely care and take pride in their food. The burgers are backyard, homestyle with their own secret family recipe touches. The staff is always friendly and the cook in back (is that Unk?), he is always hollering over to you to make sure you were more than happy with your burger. They know how to do it. Support this local, family owned business. You'll get rewarded in return.

The family wanted a good burger and Unk's did not disappoint. First-timers are offered a sample of the beans which are amazing and tempted my husband to order his burger with beans on top. Burgers are made fresh daily with ground onion so just ask for no onion if you don't want them. Each order is customized and my family added a hashbrown, bacon, grilled onions to our bugers. French fries, curly fries and onion rings are so crispy. Great staff- Our waitress Jackie was so friendly and was on top of refills throughout the meal and the cook asked how our meal was. Perfect late afternoon lunch meal and worth it to go a little out of the way.

Unk's Burgers has been on the scene for at least two years and until a chance remark during the Food Critics broadcast on KCUR I didn't even know it existed. But now I know and, even better, I really enjoyed my visit at lunch time today. The menu is dominated by burgers, starting with a basic four choices (one of them a double) but also includes some others on the menu board that might be worth exploring on another visit (such as "the Crazy Nephew burger"- - I think that was the name). I decided to keep it simple for my first visit and order an Unk with the addition of bread and butter pickles that is called "Sweet Auntie". I added cheddar cheese for a small up-charge and chose to also add mustard and ketchup from the generous list of 'free' additions that also included mayo, lettuce, tomato, onions, raw or grilled, and a few other items. There are also many interesting up charge add-on items, bacon, for instance. But like I said, I wanted to keep it simple so I could judge the burger by it's flavor and texture. What was served is a quality, hand formed patty with a smoky grilled flavor. It makes a good upscale burger. I ordered beer-battered onion rings that were tasty and had nice crunch. And since I was a first time customer, our sweet little server, Lisa, offered me a tasting sample of baked beans. OKAY, I'm getting baked beans next time, for sure! They are yummy sweet with a nice spicy kick. Dear Daughter #1 had an Unk's burger with cheese and loaded with most of the additions from the 'free' side of the menu. She paired her's with sweet potato fries and was very happy with the results. Unk's is family owned and operated. It isn't a late night joint, never opening before 11 a.m. and even on Friday & Saturday they close by 9 p.m. And they are closed all day Sunday. They serve a few other items including a catfish sandwich, a chicken sandwich and at least one salad selection, plus several sides and they do serve beer, for those who have to have beer n burgers. All in all, Unk's Burgers is a cool little place and I'm glad that I finally found it! I'll be back!

I ate here earlier this week... and have now been here 3 times in the last 5 days! Yes, I said it, 3 TIMES in ONE WEEK-bringing a different friend or family member each time! Everything is FABULOUS. I highly recommend the baked beans as a side, they are ESPECIALLY SPECTACULAR! Unk, the owner, makes sure to come over and see how everything is and ask about you and the people at your table. They have SPLENDID customer service and food! The bonus? It is a small, local business and it deserves as much business as possible! - I Diidn't Get Fat By Eating Crap Food

We stopped here because of the reviews- and it did not disappoint!! The food and service were both excellent! The burgers are flavorful and juicy - so good! The fries are crispy and perfectly cooked. The fried pickles are also out of this world!! Unks is in a convenient location when you are traveling on highway 50 too. A highly recommended stop for the best burger and fries anywhere!

I'm sorry Unk's, but I got to be honest... The only good thing about this place is the customer service unfortunately. The first time I went there they had the most awesome beer battered onion rings i've ever had, and I made sure to tell Mr. Unk. He told me he had been working on the recipe for a long time to get it just right. I was very impressed and happy that it was freshly made. The burger was ok, I wasn't a fan of the meat or the spices and it was just meh for me but would have given the place four stars considering service and the onion rings. The second time I went there, maybe 6 months after my first time I was basically going for those onion rings! So I ordered them. Well, they didn't have them because why? Because their distributer that made them was in a dispute with them. WHAT?! I thought you made those delicious things by hand! I thought you worked on that dang recipe for ages to get it right! jFAKLWEJFOIWAJ! So, I wasn't too happy about that, so I ordered some other thing as a side, again, they weren't carrying it because of their dispute with their distributor. So basically he told me to order the sweet potato tots because basically that's all they had. So, my mom orders Iced tea with her meal... Unk ensures us it will be the best tea around... and when it arrives is super funky tasting. So, the owner asks how everything is and we mention that the tea is a little weird. So he starts explaining and showing us the bag of tea he gets from coke-a-cola. He says since it's been open all day we got the very last bit of it. I'm a little confused... how hard is it to make tea yourself? Why would they openly admit and show us the gross tea they were serving. Maybe most places don't brew their own tea but I was under the impression lots of restaurants do brew it fresh (I think even McDonalds brews their tea every day). So basically, in summary. A majority of the things here aren't fresh. I totally get that not everything can be fresh, I totally get that some things are pre packaged. But don't try to convince me that you have fresh ingredients when you don't, AND SURE AS HECK DON'T TELL ME YOUR ONION RINGS ARE FRESH, what are you a monster?! Also, everything here is single use. Sytrofoam cups, paper plates, plasticware... but really it comes down to the food. Again Unk's, i'm so sorry... I wanted to like you so much, I love supporting local businesses Unfortunately, Freddy's opened up right next to them. If they don't figure out how to change up their game, i'm afraid they might not be open for much longer. :(

Tried Unk's for the first time today and we were impressed! Best all-American style burger I've had in KC. The patty is flattened like a steakburger so if you don't like that, this is not for you. The meat was really delicious and they say they put onions directly into it (unless you tell them not to) and maybe that's why I like it a lot. You pick the toppings but there's free toppings (lettuce, onions, tomatoes, sauce) and ones that cost extra (cheese, mushrooms, etc). I had the Unk's burger and husband had a chicken sandwich. Hubby said it was "awesome" and we shared seasoned fries which were also really good. They gave us a sample of the beans which were delicious. Glad we tried it but a bit expensive for just burgers with drinks at a little over $20 not including tip.

Absolutely one of my favorite places to eat. The service could not possibly be any better. Some of the most friendly people I have met. The veggie burger is so good, fried pickles are killer, perfect sweet potato fries and above all the BEANS! They are a must try. I love that there is paper on the table and you can play games with your family while you wait or draw a picture:) expect a little wait because the food is made fresh to order. No warmers with food that sat all day!!

Wow this is by far the best burger joint in Lee's summi. The owner is super friendly and greets every guest. The food is fresh and made to order. The burgers are juicy never dry. They're great with any request and if you invent an awesome burger combo they may even add it to the menu. I also love that the tables are covered with paper so you can doodle while you wait. The walls are covered with customers pictures.

Me and my son tried Unk's Burgers and loved it! My son is very picky and we are constantly trying to find a restaurant that isn't a fast food chain that we both like. Well we finally found a place. We tried the Unk's burger, turkey burger and onion rings. Very tasty and the onion rings were awesome! I wish I would have known there was a large screen tv and couch to hang out in otherwise we would have gone to watch the KC Royals games there. We know now! Thanks to Jesse and his team!! Can't wait to go back.

I had the Unk Burger and it was one of the best burgers around. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I would definitely come back and would recommend an Unk Burger to anyone! While we were here a young man (20) came in for his Birthday lunch and decided to take on the Ryan Special with 3 beef patties topped with a Crispy Chicken breast. Unk came out from the kitchen and led us in a Happy Birthday tune (Unk was a little off key ) :-) and then he fed the whole restaurant to fresh baked chocolate chip cookies....still warm and gooey! This place is a MUST visit if you are in the area and hungry for a good burger.

I assure you I'm not being paid to say this. The cheeseburger I just ate was absolutely the best I've ever had, phenomenal. It's even better than mine. They have been open since November 25th. It seems only by word of mouth (or word of Yelp.) but things get around when you have the best cheeseburgers in town. this is by far, better than Five Guys or Smash. I was promptly greeted by the owner, who shook my hand, and told me to sit down and he'd be right with me. I ordered the basic Unk Burger, plain with cheese, and he says, "That's how I like them." I've met my burger match, YES! I also ordered curly fries.(They aren't on the menu, but are worth ordering.) The owner, kept making friendly conversation with myself and the other patrons. He even shook my hand and said he had to leave to go and pick up his daughter. At this point, his son took over serving. The owner is Jesse. The son, one of them is Justen. Justen was cooking. The owner is Jesse. The food came out, hot, fresh and fantastic. The cheeseburger was juicy, and seasoned with onions cooked in with the burger, but unnoticed, only by taste. The bun was perfect, and the American cheese was thickly sliced. The curly fries were seasoned. There's alot of them. There's ketchup on the table, and I needed it. I also ordered unsweetened tea, which was fresh. Jesse and his son were remarkable hosts. Very friendly and infact, I got to talking to the owner. They are a local Raytown family, with the sons graduating from Raytown Highschool. I've been reading reviews for Unk's for weeks, and was totally excited to try it, and glad I did. It's now my favorite burger place, my go-to place when I don't want to cook.

This place is a good burger joint with great customer service. I love their fries and they have a burger called a ghost pepper I believe? Anyways its good food and have been here multiple times. It's a little pricy but a nice change from the standard big burger chains. This should really be a 4.5 because of price but I feel I cannot take half a star away so I push forward with 5. Also, I believe it's a family joint which I like to support.

Love this place. Unk and Jesse do a good job making you feel at home. If Jesse offers to pick your toppings go for it! They're awesome! Never had baked beans on a burger before but they are very tasty. Breakfast burger also very good.

I was looking for a place that served Fried pickles and this place came up.. it is located in a strip mall.. but it has some really good food. The Pickles were great... they were chips and the batter was crispy with a good flavor.. we also had the bake beans and they were really good.. they were sweet.. I do not like beans and I love them.. my boyfriend says they really reminded him of chile... either way they were good. The hamburgers were great .. they come with onions in the meat so if you don't want that... let them know... it was a cute place and really friendly staff.. they have pictures from local school kids that are really cute...

One of the best burgers I've ever had. I'm not usually a fan of onions but I loved how they were chopped up and provided just the right seasoning by being cooked into the meat.

  • Kelly H.

The food is good. That's it. Not great and definitely not "the best burger in the world" as Unk had promised he'd make me. That being said, the service is worthy of 5 stars. Hell, if 6 stars were possible, I'd give them 6 stars on their service alone! Last time I went in, I was seated on the huge leather couch, tray tables were pulled out for me, and I was handed the remote to the giant television. I left feeling less like I'd been in a restaurant and more like I'd been hanging out at a friend's house enjoying pretty good burgers, beans, and fries.

Wow. Just had my first Unk burger and it was so good I wish I had room for another. These could become addictive. I just had a regular burger with the normal ketchup mustard, lettuce and pickle. A good burger should not need anything else.

I never went in Unk's and perhaps if I had, my experience would be different. Instead, my husband and a friend of ours went there together on their way home from Central MO to try some burgers. While there, my sweet husband called to inquire if I'd like him to pick up something for me on his way out. I don't think he would have asked if he knew the fiasco that would come. When he and our friend finally get their burgers, both orders were wrong. It started to get close to closing time and now they were feeling rushed because of the messed up burgers. Still, he hoped mine would fare better. He got my order after and brought it home for me. Mind you, this place is in Lee's Summit, about 25 minutes drive from our downtownish KCMO home. I knew the burger wouldn't be steaming hot and that's ok with me so it would be unfair to add that to the review. Despite this, it's just an average burger. Maybe 3.5 stars. Definitely nothing worth a long drive out of the way for. What really upset me was that I had the hubbie order a customized burger with my beloved mushrooms and onions, for which he paid extra and I ended up getting a naked burger. This place is almost a half hour drive away so it's not like we're going to go there so wow we're down to two stars. The place is closed until Monday or Tuesday so I call them telling them nicely that they got my to-go order wrong after getting my husband's in-restaurant order wrong and to just give me a call back. This was three months ago. I've never received a call to credit or even apologize for the wrong order. I won't hold my breath about ever getting a call so one star because your customer "service" pretty much sucks.

First time visiting Unk's as I had a craving for a burger and Yelp pointed me here... SOOOO glad it did! Had the Unk Burger (you choose your own toppings to have it any way you want) and it was great, and Auntie's baked beans which were OUT OF THIS WORLD awesome! If you come here and don't get some of those beans you're cheating yourself, best I've had in my life and there ain't even a close second. Atmosphere was great as well, it feels like you're at a favorite Aunt & Uncle's house and they're cooking your favorites for you. The restaurant was tidy and clean as a whistle to boot, big pluses in my book. Can't say enough good things about the place. Next time you're in the mood for a burger, swing in to Unk's and thank me later. :-)

I was passing through Lees Summit and we were looking for a place to eat someone said they wanted a burger. While looking for a place Unk's burgers came up and we all agreed to try it. I am so happy we did great food and atmosphere and this will be a stopping point when ever I'm in town for sure. Unk's himself came out to ask how were are doing and just to chat. None of us enjoy fast food but, we still wanted burgers. Great place!

Unk's is a charming, family-owned burger joint that is nestled into a strip mall in Lee's Summit. I was a huge fan of Jesse's personality. I loved the spice profiles that were meshed into my burger. My toppings were ketchup, mayo, lettuce, and mushrooms. Unk's isn't a Blanc's burger where to get Rosemary or Caverari on your burger. Unk's keeps the menu very, very simple. But what they make, they make well. If I had to choose somewhere to compare them to, I would probably say that Unk's is much like Five Guys (which is a compliment in my book). Service is beyond friendly. Perhaps a tad bit unorganized. I completely support local businesses and think that Unk's has the potential to be a staple in Lee's Summit.

I see all the four and five-star ratings popping up, so I am going against the grain here. The staff UNK, Mrs. Unk, Jesse and the rest have to be just about the friendly est people on the planet. However, it comes back to Unk's burger doesn't it? They use Unk's secret recipe, which is the spices used on the burger. It was way overpowering. He is using good meat never frozen so let it stand a little on its own. Not a fan of the spice at all. Having said that I respect a number of these other reviewers so we will go back and try it again and see what happens. Stay tuned for round 2

I must update. I decided to head back, and took my girlfriend in tow, so I had twice the experiences to rate on. And in the end, my 4-star ranking...remained the same. It was 2pm on a weekend, and the place was absolutely packed. We headed straight back to place an order for takeout, and as expected, the people were ridiculously friendly. After perusing the menu, the order was placed - 2x Unk burgers, an order of onion rings, and an order of fried pickles. The total was $17 or so, with tax. So, remember that previous review where the writer said it took ages to get their food, and another writer said that had been solved? Turns out...false. When the place is packed, it can take forever. For what was basically two burgers with fries (well, fried sides), it took 20+ minutes. Yes, the waiting was comfortable, what with the sofa and TV...but still, 20+ minutes for that is a bit much. So the food...delicious. I enjoyed my burger as much as the last time, and my girlfriend definitely enjoyed her first Unk burger. The side dishes...look, I'm really not that fat, but I expect a bit more quantity for my nearly $3 spent on a side dish. The onion rings were fantastic...the fried pickles were very tasty...but the quantity, for about $6 for both, was light to say the least. I'll continue to patronize Unks. They have a very good burger, amazing service, and OK sides. But, I will not pretend this place is flawless.

Here's my new fave burger joint in Lee's Summit. Heck, it may be my new fave burger joint east of the Rockies. It hasn't quite superseded the holy grail that is the In-n-Out double-double, but it comes pretty darn close. Good news for Jess, the slow service she experienced may have just been a fluke. I ordered the "Unk Burger with" and it came out quickly. Holy Toledo, that was one fresh burger! Seasoned fries were just as awesome. The employees could not be friendlier or more personable... I mean, it's just not possible. On a scale of one to ten, they were all solid elevens. It's obvious that they are all having a ball serving awesome food to lots of friends, including the ones that they have just met. While I was there, I saw the server (Mrs. Unk?) handle a very large party that dropped in shortly after I arrived, cheerfully pushing a bunch of tables together; take three to-go orders in rapid succession; and serve a table with a family of four (and stop to make silly faces at the toddler to make him giggle)... all with an amazing smile. Plus, I happened to be there during playoff football, so Unk left his post at the grill to whoop and holler at the teevee during the last four minutes of the Saints-Niners game. Yes, they have a corner with a television and a couple of couches where you can wait for your take-out order. They call it the lounge. I call it pretty cool for a little burger spot.

Welcomed 2 for 2 on arrival. The first time the waiter explained to us the menu and a few of the items he really thought we'd like. The top half of the front page of the menu has a little bit of a back story , but does contain some important information. Their burgers have onions cooked in them, and you do have an option without the onions on request. Also at the end of this top section it gives you the topping choices applicable to any of the burgers. Chose the Auntie Burger both times. Sweet crunchy pickle slices, with their normal burger and I chose grilled onions, lettuce and tomato. The sweetness of the pickle I think is a good replacement for ketchup. The burgers themselves are quite tasty and have a good seasoning versus just plain burgers you get at other joints. The seasoned fries are good. Nothing special, but if you go to a burger joint for the fries there is something wrong. Quantity, was a tad on the shy side. Not that I need more fries. I've tried the peppercorn onion rings which were also good, but while they had the smell of peppercorns and I could see them, they didn't add much to the taste. Quantity of the onion rings made me think I was getting my money's worth. Looking forward to trying the fried pickles next time. First time was greeted by Unk, during the meal. They are all very friendly at this establishment. They weren't busy on the afternoon on Sat, but were steady when I went for lunch on a weekday. Service time was fine on both days. I will be back for a third time.

The food is excellent, especially the baked beans. The burgers are fresh and of quality meat. They no longer serve the peppered onion rings but the battered ones are still above average. My only complaint is that the prices seem very high for the quantity of food served. Portions are very modest and in particular the side of baked beans is a tiny dish for $2.75. You will spend almost $11 to get a single burger with one side and a drink. The service is very friendly and is a family owned business.

I'm not going to be the one who doesn't give them 5 stars. This is a great local burger joint that this area badly needs! First thing I noticed was that it's very clean and well decorated. The service is very different for a burger joint in that you sit down and they bring you a menu. I'm not sure how long they can keep this up with just the one guy taking orders. They got quite busy when we were there. The guy taking the orders is very friendly and helpful. The burgers are very tasty. Here's where I might have dropped them a star...they are very well done. I'm used to a burger being a little more on the medium-well side and juicier. Maybe I can order it less cooked next time? I didn't ask, but will. Having said that...it's the tastiest well-done burger I have ever eaten. The fries, be it sweet potato or regular, were perfect. My 2 boys each had one. My wife had the beer-battered onion rings and I thought those were great! I could actually taste the beer in them. I have never had beer-battered anything at a restaurant where I could actually taste the beer. You can't go wrong in this place if you like burgers. Even my oldest boy who doesn't eat burgers unless I grind the steak and cook them myself, likes the ones here.

I live east side of Lee's Summit and went to Unk's on the advice of my house painters. Drove to the West Side of Lee's Summit, ordered, drove home and found that I was short on my order, they forgot my hamburger. Called and drove back. After arriving back at Unk's, it took 20 minutes to get my burger. Seemed overpriced for what you got.... 2 burgers and beans for 27.00. No apology for messing up the order. By the time I got home the second time, it took 1 hour and 25 minutes to get lunch. I won't repeat this fiasco any time soon. The beans are very good however.

In the past I was a Winstead's / Flea Market burger fan, but since Unk's opened I've changed my tune! Easily the friendliest place in town, the service was personal and attentive, and the burgers are the best around! I understand that all meat served there is fresh every day, and you can tell. I highly recommend burgers and their baked beans (with turkey rather than ham) are outstanding!

  • J G.

The 3 star rating is for the service, they definitely have that down. But the food was nothing notable, average at best. Had the bean topped burger and seasoned fries. My friend had the Aunt Sweets Burger, not the best we have experienced I think with Cokes we spent over $20 for 2 people. Must be an acquired taste?

Had a single with pickles, grilled onions and jalapenos, I really like the fact that you can specify light, medium or heavy on the jalapenos. The onions rings were very good but were a little pricey for the quantity. Very friendly staff and efficient even though they were pretty busy when we arrived.

I am very burger picky, but I do like that they have some very different choices. I had a breakfast burger that was topped with hashbrowns, bacon & an egg. Very good, but the one thing I would like to see them change is the ability to request a different temperature.....all their burgers are cooked medium well.

Unk's is more 5 Guys than Blanc. That is to say it's basic beef burgers, with assorted toppings. But with beef burgers this good, why would you need alternative patties. Unk's offers singles or doubles with toppings as basic as cheddar and bacon or as interesting home made sweet pickles & baked beans. I go back and forth between the "basement boy" (a double, topped how you like) and the new "Hot Head Nephew" (grilled with habeñero peppers mixed in and topped with pepper cheese). My go to side is the peppercorn dusted onion rings, but they have fries (regular or curly, seasoned or not) beer batter onion rings and those quasi famous beans. If you absolutely don't do beef they have a turkey burger and veggie burger as well as a couple chicken offerings. The dining room is a nice medium size, cheery with all the light thru the front widows and tidy as heck. Service is good and goes beyond friendly to downright jovial. Order at the counter, and if you take out like I do there is a waiting area with couch & TV. Your food will take a few minutes, especially if they are busy as they make everything when you order.

Fantastic tasting burgers. It's weird that you can choose your cooking temperature but they cook it perfectly. Their naked beans are a must. Do not leave their with out eating the baked beans.

  • Brenda M.

Great burgers, the meat is seasoned well and the onion in the meat adds a whole other dimension of flavor. My burger came out fresh and hot, I got my usual burger, which is anything with lots of bacon on it, the sweet potato fries were not as good as the burger but were still good. We were served by a young guy who was very nice and took our orders quickly and everything came out just as we ordered it. He even took the time to do some drawings with the kids. I would say it's a bit steep for a burger joint, but if you compare the prices to it's closest competitor Five Guys, they are in the same ballpark price wise, plus you get better service at Unk's so I would say it's reasonable for a once in a while treat.

Burger and fry at its finest. Truly an American business run by fantastic nice people. The kitchen was running a bit behind on our last visit so Unk came out with free cookies for everyone. BTW service was NOT slow in my opinion, Unk is just nice.

My wife and I visited Unk's this last Saturday night. My son had raved about the burgers and yelp had decent reviews so we gave it a try. Prelims: The Owner: Unk (Jesse) enjoys working the dining area. He is part marketer and part best friend from childhood. I just met him, but now think of him as my buddy that runs that great burger joint in Lees Summit. Baked Beans: Very different from any others I have had, yet still tasted like baked beans. They are great! I didn't eat enough to do the under the sheet fart test but hope to carry that out before month's end. (Please don't tell my wife. You know it is only a valid test if your spouse is unaware that you are about to start it.) Other Sides: Fries and rings were good as expected. I don't ask much from sides, only that they taste like they are suppose to taste. Burger Toppings: everything you would expect and a few things you wouldn't (fried egg!?!?) Prices: Comparable to Five Guys. Décor: Give me break. If you are worried about how the space is decorated, you don't need to be eating in a burger joint. (For the record, it is kind of like eating in someone's family room that just happens to be in a strip mall.) Now the important stuff: Burgers: I have lived perhaps two thirds of my expected lifespan. It is possible that the stars aligned just so and that I experienced that one in a million event that everyone hopes to witness and will never be repeated: the making of the perfect hamburger. Or, maybe the burgers at Unk's are always this good. My wife did say her burger was the best she had ever eaten, so maybe the perfect burger is the norm here. Perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked, exactly the right bun, the mayo, onions, everything was spot on. And the bun was toasted. Full disclosure urges me to tell you that I don't remember every burger I have ever eaten, but I do remember some very fine burgers from the obvious K.C. haunts (Five Guys, Blanc, B2B, Pigwich, Westport Flea, etc.) I can attest to you, dear yelp reader, that this is the best burger I ever remember eating. There isn't much to a great burger and yet so many fall so short. In my book, Unk is the new gold standard of burgers.

Very good burgers....and I would agree with a few others...this is more of a Five Guys than a Blanc..however they have a much more varied menu offering on their burgers than five guys....Very good burger...but you have to get it medium well...no other option. Their baked beans were also very tasty!

Not bad and great service by the owner and his family, but really pricey for 2 burgers, 1 order of fries, 1 order of fried pickles, and 2 beers...$31!

I've been here a couple of times now and Jesse and his folks always make it seem like you're a long lost member of the family the minute you walk in the door. Be prepared to have a few minutes of conversation with Unk about whatever might be on your mind today, because he stops at every table and chats for a little while. As for the food, the burgers are great, as are the sides (try the sweet potato tots) with my personal favorite being the "Hot-Headed Nephew", complete with chopped habanero in the patty. My favorite memory of this was when I ordered it and one of the nephews stuck his head out the kitchen window and reminded me "A real man would get it with extra peppers..." with a big chuckle. It's that kind of playfulness that makes every trip to Unk's feel like you're right at home.

Well, this is another family owned operation that does the trick for me. People with a good attitude work there. And they season things... actually they season everything. Drink plenty of water with your meal. ; ) I had Peppercorn O-rings, and they were deeeeelicious. Very different to have that pepper "pop" added to o-rings. My burger was the BBQ baked bean topped burger... I think it was called the Bodacious. That was an interesting combo that worked. The buns here are soft and tasty as well. Remember when you come here to get some sweetness on the burger... like onions or the beans or BBQ sauce... to balance the saltiness of the spicing they use. You will have a much better taste experience if you do. They are also going to launch and unadvertised "reserve burger" menu with some crazy combinations and monster sizes. Don't forget to ask about that... it may not be on the regular menu they are currently redoing.

New favorite burger joint in Lee's Summit? I think so! Found this place the usual way, starving and scouring yelp for places nearby. As much as I hate to admit it, Tiger W. has some pretty good taste for what's in the area (damn you for having so many check ins! :)), haha. Having seen nothing but positive reviews, I decided it was worth the trip over to check out. The place is tastefully decorated, with a comfy couch and TV in the back that was an awesome touch while I waited for my take out order. Service? Friendly and quick. Now on to what people want to know. Their burgers are delicious. I had an Unk's burger, with bleu cheese, and seasoned fries. Not much more to say about the burger itself other than it was seasoned nicely and was juicy. Portion size was good and my whole meal came out under $10. My only gripe was the bag for the fries. They were a little less crispy by the time I got them home. Having them folded into the little pouch causes any steam from them to make them a bit soggier. Nothing that I'd take rating away from, but just a thought. If you don't fold the bag for the fries, they should stay nice and crispy on the drive home :) All in all, a great addition to the area. I wish they had been able to move in downtown (Maxwell's is still empty), so that they get more walk in business.

I loved this place! We drove by and decided to visit over Thanksgiving weekend. They had a soft opening, as they explained, that weekend with a limited menu. I got the BBQ baked bean burger, while my hubby got their cheeseburger. Very yummy, since they make their patties with onions cooked inside. (They also provide a patty without onions too, for those who do not like onions!) I ecspecially enjoyed my burger because it was a awesome sweet-in-salty combination. I liked it so much that I put Unk's Burgers at the top of my list for my article the Best burger in Kansas City on examiner.com . Visit examiner.com/city-guide-… to read all about it!

Good, home cooked style burgers; perhaps the best hamburger in the Kansas City area... Let's say it's Saturday afternoon and you've invited friends over for burgers. Unfortunately it's raining so cooking them on the smoker or grill isn't going to happen. But you have a good cast iron frying pan so that will have to do. After you put the pan on to heat up, you pull out that fresh, 90% lean hamburger you got at Trader Joe's yesterday. This is good stuff indeed! But, since it won't get that smoky taste from the grill, how to season it? Hmm...a quick check of the cupboard reveals that you have some seasonings. So you take some onion powder, black pepper, paprika and pinch of salt and add it to the meat. You also want these burgers to be special so you dice up an onion and toss that in too. Man, this is going to taste good! You make some small patties, about five or six ounces each, and place them in your frying pan. While they are cooking you grab the hamburger buns to get them ready. Hey, since you are cooking inside, why not make the buns special too? So you heat up another frying pan, toss in a little butter, lay the buns in the pan and let them get just right...that crispy, brown, buttery look that tastes so good! Burgers need turning so you flip them over. Better squash them with a spatula, don't want them to take too long to cook. Ok, now what about the toppings? Well, you have fresh leaf lettuce, tomatoes, a few different types of cheeses, mayo, ketchup, maybe even some fried bacon left from breakfast...yep, all the typical stuff that makes home cooked burgers so good! Okay, now the burgers are done! Call everyone into the kitchen and let them build their burgers! "Wow, these burgers are great!" everyone says! And you agree. Perhaps the seasoning in the meat is a little too strong, perhaps squashing them in the pan made them a little too dry...but these are the best pan fried burgers you've had in a while. Now, burgers cooked on an outdoor grill would taste better; that smoky taste just can't be beat, but pan fried burgers are pretty good too. This is the kind of burger they make at Unk's. Home cooked burgers, cooked on a flat grill, made from lean meat and a healthy dose of seasoning. I've made the same a hundred times and so have you. Just basic good burgers. The folks at Unk's have taken this proven formula and put it on a menu. Add to that a few fried sides, be genuinely friendly to your customers, tastefully decorate the place in red and black, and you have a winning formula. I wish them well. These are not incredible burgers, nothing like what you can get at Fuddruckers, nowhere near the guilty pleasure of an In-N-Out burger. A bit too much seasoning for my taste but the quality of the meat makes up for that. I also wish they would squash a little less fat out...but compared to Five Guys and the rest of the competition, Unk's burgers are a welcome change. Just like the burgers your friends provide when you go to their house on a rainy day.

The staff at Unk's tries really hard to please, so it pains me to write this review. I'm just going to say it: the burger isn't great. They kill the meat with spices. So much to the point it reminded me of gyro meat. I was very disappointed. It is clear that the staff has meticulously thought out the details of their restaurant and I wish them the best. But, I won't be going back there.

I'm going to be the first jerk who goes less than five stars...but, Unk's, it's for your own good, because I really want to see you work out the few, but noticeable kinks. And I'll tell you why...because that was a freaking DELICIOUS burger. Constructive criticism, and stuff I'd love to see improve. First things first...this place is so friendly...you can tell it's a family affair, and the whole staff was super nice. The guys working the grill were bantering through the pass-through window behind the counter with a patron who'd ordered a triple, they were a riot. It's a little shop, but clean, neat, and tidy - unfussy, but nice. They put down butcher paper on the the tables for kids to draw on, and there were several families in the place. I'm assuming that the young guy who seated us was possibly the owner's son, given the other reviews...nice kid! No issues with the attitude of the service. Everyone was personable. My main beef (hah, beef!) was the wait, followed by the portion size. As to the first, it's obvious they're keeping it simple and not hiring a big staff for their cozy little dining room...I get that. But something must have been off, because we waited over a half-hour for two burgers and an order of onion rings, which seems extreme. The dining room wasn't empty, but it wasn't packed, either. I didn't see anybody come in for pickups/to go orders, so I don't think they were swamped in that capacity, either. I did notice that others seemed to be waiting just as long as we were, so maybe there was a technical difficulty going on...nobody else's reviews have mentioned waiting overly long, so hopefully it was a fluke. A couple of the staff did come out and let us know that it would be coming shortly, at one point, so I think they knew it was taking a while, although we weren't visibly ticked or anything, just chatting. I ordered the Unk burger with mushrooms, and prepared to be wowed. As the wait drew on longer, I got more and more hopeful...when it arrived, I felt crestfallen that it had taken so long. The prices are good, but the burger was, while not quite slider-small, definitely snack-size - thick enough, but small in diameter. And it may have been me reading the menu too quickly, but it came with no stock toppings...no lettuce, pickles. Just the mushrooms I ordered extra. So it looked extra naked and little. Others have noted a toasted bun...I don't know that mine was. I only got five onion rings, but they were tasty. The saving grace, and the reason for four stars and not three was that the meat itself was wonderfully flavorful. Hot, juicy, flavorful, perfectly cooked, fresh off the grill - well without being dried out, and awesomely seasoned. Love the onions cooked in. Sooooooooo tasty. So tasty that I was even MORE sad that it only took me about four bites to finish it . Again, I cannot emphasize that the deliciousness of the food is not in question, here. I'd pay a little bit more for larger portion sizes, though. Nobody else has seemed to have an issue with portion size or wait, though, so I'm hoping it was just an isolated incident, and will try them again, accordingly. The product is good...it's a new place, so I'm hopeful the execution will get finessed, because it's a nice addition to the area.

I can see why some people are put off by the seasoning. These burgers do get a heavy hand with the spices, but I think it's great. Not too salty. Loved my Unk burger. Great fries. My boss raved about his turkey burger. The space is nice, and the service was exceptionally friendly. Do yourself a favor if you're in Lee's Summit and grab an Unk.

The husband and I stopped in to pay a visit to Unk's this past Saturday in the late afternoon. We were meeting friends for dinner that night, but were desperate for a bite to tide us over. Man am I glad we stopped in! First of all, Unk himself greeted us at the door. This is a local businessman who is eager to meet the community and welcome customers into his restaurant. He was funny and welcoming - he made us feel right at home and got things started off on the right foot. He took our drink order as he walked us to our table. His son came over with menus and we could tell he wanted to provide the best service! Nicest kid! Any place that treats you like family when you walk in is cool in my book. Because we were going out later, we split an Unk Burger with american cheese, bacon, and all the toppings: lettuce, grilled onions, mayo, mustard, ketchup, pickles. Side of beer battered onion rings. The burger came out, already cut in half for us to split. One bite into this burger and I knew we'd be heading back to Unk's a lot! The burger was thick, juicy, hot, and served on a buttery, glowing bun. One of his secrets is onions mixed right into the fresh (never frozen) beef. This is PRIME hangover food if I've ever seen it. Do yourself a favor and tie one on some night, just so you can come to Unk's and work off that hangover with a delicious burger. We zipped through our burger halves pretty quickly, and I'll be damned if I didn't want another one right away. We wanted to order the peppercorn onion rings, but they were out. Oh well, that's an excuse to go back! The regular beer battered rings were fantastic - flavorful and crisp with the right amount of seasoning. Not quite enough for two people to split, but plenty for one. I thought their prices were really phenomenal. $4.75 for a burger and a bit extra to add cheese. $2.75 for sides of fries, onion rings, or fried pickles. I think they might have sweet potato fries, too. I didn't see them on the menu, but they were listed as an item on our burger ticket. All in all, 1 burger, 1 side and two drinks set us back just over $9 bucks. That's a deal. Unk says that his liquor license is on its way. I could definitely do one of those burgers with a cold one, no doubt. Love this place, glad to see a new, friendly local business in Lee's Summit! They are closed on Sundays, bummer. Can't wait for my next burger!

If you are looking for a bland burger, I suggest McDonalds. If you want a yummy burger with unique flavor, then Unk's is your place. Everything I have tried is really good. Unk and his family are super nice and welcoming. They make you feel like you've been buddies for years. I will keep returning, that's for sure!

Burgers taste homemade. If that's what you want, this is your place. They taste like you walk in your kitchen grab a lump of ground chuck, flatten it just a bit. Put it in a skillet. Sprinkle with garlic salt, and onion powder. Put lid on and cook it all the way through. Its well done but still moist. Not bad, just not the burger I'm looking for when I leave my house.

I am a big burger fan, and I have to say this is the best burger I have had in Lee's summit. Fries were good too, and the service was awesome. They really make you feel like you are a guest in there own home, could not have been more friendly. Give it a try and you will not be disappointed.

We just finished eating. I think either you like it, or you don't. Unfortunately we're on the don't side. The spices are just too much for our taste - very strong. But the owners were friendly, beans were good, and the place was nice and clean. If you're a spicy burger person, you'll probably love it. I'm the type of person who savors the flavor of beef with very little toppings. Since there are mixed reviews, I think everyone should at least give it a try. There were some customers complimenting them about the burgers and they had steady carry outs. I wish them the best!

Best burger...the onions in the burger make it the yummiest. Good size...topped any way you want...I had the Auntie Burger which adds bread and butter pickles. Hubby had onion rings. The baked beans were so good we got a pint to go. Unk's serves Coke products so I could get my Zero. I will be back next time I crave a burger. Unk and his wife are delightful people and very friendly. They came out to talk with us. This is a great local burger joint. The best place to get a burger in Lee's Summit!

I am already a big fan of the burgers, but yesterday Unk offered us a sample of his beans. He said "it's ok if you scream at how good they are, you're at Unk's". Well, I already have my favorite beans, and so I thought let's see how good they are. They are worthy of that scream, Unk! We were all unanimous, they are the best beans we've ever tasted and today I'm wondering if they sell them a la carte in a BIG container :) Another win!

I expected more. Meat was definitely seasoned. The waiter was very friendly. To the point of being awkward. I got the plain ole double with cheese and ketchup only, to enjoy the meat. Ordered onion rings. I got five small to medium rings. A little light in number in my opinion. The decor was a disaster. Just cluttered and uncomfortable. Service slow. The bun was a really nice ratio to the meat. Not overly big so u get too much bread. I may go back one more time and try the beans. Hopefully A different waiter is working. I would like to talk with my family and hard to do when he is hanging out at your table the whole time. Also only one waiter in the restaurant and service slow. Drove from independence to try due to reviews. Should have gone to backyard burgers or hi boy. Both better in my opinion.

We love to try new and different restaurants. I use both Yelp and UrbanSpoon reviews for ideas. Living in the same city as Unk's Burgers and having seen it from the road for a few months I knew of it but had not tried it. Having looked at the reviews it generated we decided to go ahead and try it. Holy Cow Man Alive are we glad we did. Excellent Burgers (they have their own special seasoning), Beans (again different and special seasoning) and Fries plus they have both Sweet Potato fries and Tots. Just a really good place to come for a burger and sides. Unk came out to great us as he did everyone in the restaurant and what nice people. We'll definitely be back.

The staff are very hospitable and friendly, it's nice to see people taking pride and pleasure in what they do. That combined with fresh ingredients translates to great food. I had the baked bean burger with an egg on top and it was the best burger I've ever had. Lees summit has always been disappointing in my opinion when it comes to food, too many mediocre chain restaurants so it's awesome to finally find a great place to eat.

I had heard of this place, so when I was stuck in LS with an hour to kill and the need to eat, I directly headed there. I walked in and it seemed that some high school and/or college students related to the family were eating dinner after school and preparing for the evening rush. Sounds like a good plan to me. I ordered a Auntie with cheddar, bacon, mustard, catsup, pickles, onions, tomato, and lettuce with a side of sweet potato fries. I can't complain about anything. The burger was 5.5 oz (I believe) or 5oz and was kind of like a more tasteful, thicker, juicer version of the Winstead-type burgers that are crispy-ish on the outside. The sweet potato fries were tasty. I couldn't decide between those and the spicy fries. I think next time I might try the spicy curly fries or spicy regular fries. However, sweet potato fries are hard to pass up. I will go back, I will send my family and friends. This place is good for families, small or large groups, and to-go. Prices are normal for this type of food. It is much better than fast food hamburgers.

On the way to UNK'S for my lunch with Cousin Merle and my brother Gordon I thought about what I had told them earlier. I told them that I was a burger "purist" and that I did not want someone messing with my ground beef. But then I got to thinking how could I review Unk's Burgers without eating an Unk's Burger? So I took the plunge and ordered the official Unk's Burger and I am glad I did. I thought the seasoning and amount of onions was perfect. I let their choice of seasoning make the burger so I did not add any cheese, spicy sauces or other distractions to the burger. Cost was $4.79. I ordered a side of sweet potato tater-tots that were good but not outstanding. Cousin Merle got sweet-potato fries and Brother Gordon got Onion Rings. I tasted those and they were very good. I can only rate one place for having truly 5-star great onion rings and that is Johnny Ray's - another review. The side of tater-tots was $2.49 and the size of the order was alright - not large. The size of the burger appeared to be about 1/3 lb. (before cooking) at the most. My cherry-coke was perfect. I only mention the soda because sometimes machines are set wrong on the mix, but this was just right. I ordered a chocolate chip cookie for dessert that was also very good. Merle and Gordon had the baked beans. Gordon said they were excellent but Merle said nothing. My brother also really liked the burger and his onion rings. Merle said nothing. I also really liked the bun on the burger - just the right BTB (burger to bun) ratio and a very fresh. Bun was also soft instead of firm which I don't like in a burger because it forces condiments out the side of the bun. I thought the price was very fair and I really like that this is not a corporate restaurant. It is a nice locally owned and operated business in an old and somewhat famous strip mall in Lee's Summit. Just behind the old now closed Waid's Restaurant and right beside the now mainstay Side Pockets. I cannot fairly give it 5 stars because it is not what I consider "Good As It Gets" but I am definitely a fan and will return for sure. Good as it gets for me (in Lee's Summit) would be Johnny Ray's but Unk's is up against a lot when compared to a historic Lee's Summit mainstay like JR's. They give it a good run though.

Unk's burgers were very good as were the sides I ordered - pepper corn onion rings, beans and fried pickles. It gave them 4 stars because it took a little while to get my food though there was a larger party that ordered right before I did. I will definitely go back though!

Love love LOVE this place! Stopped by for lunch last Friday and think it may have to become a routine. As soon as you open the door you feel like you walked into your friend's house. Everyone is welcoming, helpful, and all have huge friendly smiles. After being seated, my drink order was taken right away and Jesse was right behind that to explain the menu to me and take my order. I got an Unk Burger with a side of fried pickles. Prices were fair and reasonable, and the food was delicious. You could taste the freshness of the ingredients including beef that is never frozen. And the fried pickles... well I may be a little biased since I am a lover of all things pickles... but YUM! The pickles were a little spicy and the batter held on well. Thank you to Unk and Jesse for running an excellent family establishment and making every customer feel comfortable and welcomed. Can't wait to go back already
